Chieftains golf team honors Schwartz with fundraiser tournament
In athletic terms, Brian Schwartz’s love of golf was born at a driving range at a very early age.
His mother, Wendy Ryder, remembers taking a 19-month-old Brian to the Cherry Hill Driving Range in Beverly nearly every day.
“We had to live in a temporary apartment, we couldn’t move in to our [present] home on Parsonage Lane yet,” said Ryder. “I have a good swing, so we’d go to the Cherry Hill golf course, and we’d get an ice cream cone, like every day.”
Brian, Wendy’s eldest son, died in a tragic skiing accident in February 2007 at the age of 17.

From those early, sweet beginnings, Schwartz took on golf as one of his many athletic pursuits, and rose to become captain of the 2006 Masconomet Chieftains golf team. Two years later, that same team is going to honor his memory, and raise funds for the scholarship fund in his name, through the Brian Schwartz Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place on July 17 at Far Corner Golf Club in Boxford.
Golf coach Ben Hodges and Michael Ciampa, the father of golf team member Zach, are organizing the golf tournament.
“I guess I feel that, as a mother, I just don’t want Brian to be forgotten,” said Ryder. “This event, which will be an annual event that Ben is organizing, is the biggest honor to Brian.”
“The idea started actually last year, but I didn’t want to rush in to doing a golf tournament last summer without having adequate preparation and help,” said Hodges, who is both the golf and boys basketball coach at Masconomet. “This past Fall, Mike Ciampa approached me about wanting to do a golf tournament and this just became a perfect fit.”

Right now, the tournament is limited to 144 golfers, hence Hodges trying to get the word out early (“if people are interested in playing, they will need to sign up soon,” he added). The registration form for the tournament can be found online at masconomet.org/sports/golf/brianschwartzmemorial. The golf team will also be handing out registration forms around the community.

“We will be looking to give out golf shirts with the Brian Schwartz Memorial Tournament logo on them, along with other raffle items that we are still organizing, but that honor Brian,” said Hodges. “The kids have had some incredible ideas about things they want to do in this tournament that show their admiration and respect for who Brian was and the impact that he had on them as well.”
Along with raising funds for the Brian Hart Schwartz Memorial Scholarship Fund, a smaller portion of the funds raised will go towards the golf team.
“Brian was such an incredible individual that I hope this tournament will honor his memory and that it can become an annual event that people look forward to each and every year,” said Hodges. “The golf team is very excited about putting this tournament together and we are hoping for a large number of participants.”

Wendy Ryder is still considering whether or not she will take part in the actual golfing, but she will certainly be there along with her other son Jason on the day of the tournament. It will be an emotional day for the Schwartz family, especially given the many happy golf-related memories for the family.
“When Brian was 5, I had small clubs cut down and re-gripped for him, so he was really golfing early on,” said Ryder. “There was a par-3 golf course at Ferncroft Country Club, and they let us on, so Brian and I played eight holes when he was 5 years old.
“I just can’t thank Ben Hodges, Mike Ciampa and the community enough, over and over again, for helping Jason and myself, and the idea of this being an annual event,” Ryder added. “It’s more than I could have ever asked for.”
